Doing business in Istanbul
Istanbul is where both the demand and the supply of digital work in Turkey concentrate. Anyone commissioning a website here faces a range that runs from a single freelancer to an agency of a hundred people, and that range is healthy in principle. In practice it makes comparison nearly impossible, because two proposals can carry the same title, describe the same deliverable in one line, and mean completely different amounts of work.
The second thing to understand about this market is how wide the sector spread is. A restaurant in Beyoğlu, a consultancy in Maslak, a textile exporter in Merter and a clinic in Ataşehir share almost nothing in what they need online. The restaurant needs a location and a reservation, the exporter needs a product catalogue and a way for a wholesale buyer to make contact, the clinic needs an appointment and a reason to be trusted. A single purchased theme serves none of them well, and the cost of discovering that is a second project.
Third is the level of competition. In nearly every sector here the first page of search results is already occupied by sites that have been there for years. That does not mean a new site is pointless, but it does mean a site alone will not put you in front of those results. We set that expectation at the start: a website makes you findable and credible, while search position is separate, ongoing work. We do not promise rankings, and we would be suspicious of anyone who does.
There is a consequence of that competition worth stating. A visitor to your site in this city is looking at four or five others the same day. They rarely choose the most elaborate one. They choose the one that answered their question fastest, which is why a page explaining how you work, what a project involves and how to reach a human being outperforms an animated introduction almost every time.
Finally there is scale. A number of businesses here grow quickly, and the load a site carries a year from now may look nothing like today's.
